Jill Scheer and Mike Vyhovsky
(I think) check out the chickens at Gemuetlichkeit Days in Jefferson in
September of '78. Jill competed in the rolling pin toss and did
pretty well, if I remember correctly. |
|
Waiting for the
Gemuetlichkeit parade to start on Sunday morning are Harry Kline and
Mike Rule. It doesn't look like Harry got enough sleep the night
before. Maybe the pool table wasn't comfortable! |
|
Front-row seats and
comfortable chairs provided by the Olsen family - the best way to see
the parade!
Visible are Dave Olsen, Joelle Horn, and Bridget Brown.
Dave
tells me that Lisa Velasquez is seated between him and Joelle. Imagine
that! |
|
Okay, just one more parade
picture, I promise! Jane Ralph and Jim Olsen are hoping the
photographer
will go away. |
|
These are just some of the
people who invaded the Olsen house for two days to enjoy the
Gemuetluchkeit experience. Mr. and Mrs. Olsen always opened their
doors to a big crowd! |
|
Camp Takedown Day in early October attracted
a big group of volunteers in 1978. Pictured are: (Front,
lying down) Susan Sullivan, (First row, sitting) Jane Piercy, Wendy
Jones, Barby Spoehr, Julie Cowsert, ?, Amy Wimmer, Margaret Jones, (2nd
row, kneeling) Stephanie Shreffler, ?, ?, ?, Amy Sutherland, Jenny
Porter, Sue Baker, Jenny Secrest, (3rd row, leaning over) Heather
Chermak, Bridget Brown, (Back
row, standing) Jim Meigs, Steve Blumreiter, Mike Rule, Joelle Horn, ?,
Jill Scheer, Jane Ralph, Ellen Winchell, Barb Gutting, Bob Holloway,
Kathy
Nesbitt, ?, Sarah Snyder. (Help me with these, please!) |
|
As often happens, a nice
group picture degenerates into a big wrestling fest! |
|
Later in October, Dave Olsen
and I drove to Champaign, Illinois to visit Karen Johnson and Denise
Winklehake in their apartment at the University of Illinois.
Here, Karen and Denise clean up the kitchen after a breakfast of
donuts and cereal. |
|
On yet another weekend in
late October or early November, I took Joelle Horn with me to visit
some Phantom people in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Here, Joelle and I
pose in the parking lot on the bluffs. |
|
Barby Spoehr, Jenny Secrest,
Riley Cooper, and Sue Cowsert stand near the edge of a cliff in the La
Crosse
bluffs. |
|
To cap off a busy fall of
1978, many staff and campers gather at Phantom for Winter Camp.
Here, Marshall Wolowicz (standing), Jay Wolowicz, Jeff Flor, and
Dan Flor pose for a picture before hitting the big sledding slope,
Campfire Hill. |
|
There they go! Jeff
Flor, Jay Wolowicz, Dan Flor, and Tom Loeffel (I think) zoom down the
hill, trying to hook up with Marshall Wolowicz who is following on his
own innertube. (This was the safe sledding. They started
jumping over people later on!) |
|
Mike Rule and Dave Olsen
transport some board games from the lodge to the dining hall to help
entertain the winter campers (and themselves). |
|
The last morning of Winter
Camp 1978 finds the girls up and dancing to the morning records.
(If you can name the whole chorus line, please let me know!) |
|
Ready for the long drive back
to Champaign after three hectic days of Winter Camp are Susan
Stewart (on the right) and her friend. |
